How can we help?
Answers to the things people ask most. If yours is not here, ask us and we will answer it, and add it.
Getting started
Otiya says beta. What does that mean?
Do I need an account to play?
No. To join a quiz somebody else is hosting you need nothing at all: no app, no account, no card. Open the link or scan the QR code, pick a nickname, and you are in. You only need a free account to create, save and host your own quizzes.
How do people join my quiz?
What device do people need?
Any phone, tablet, laptop or desktop with a web browser. Nothing to install. The host usually puts the shared screen on the biggest display in the room, a TV, a projector or a laptop, and everybody else answers on their own phone.
Is there anything to download?
Play online
How does Play online work?
Do I need an account to play online?
No, if you are 18 or older. Pick a username, confirm you are 18 or older and play as a guest on that device. A free account (for adults, 18 and over) lets you play from any device.
How do I play with my friends live?
Someone has a rude username. What can I do?
Open the menu next to their name and choose Report or Block. Blocked players cannot find you, add you or invite you. We review every report and can replace a username.
Hosting a live quiz
How do I start?
Can we play if we are not in the same place?
Yes. Share your screen on Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or any call that has screen sharing, and everybody answers on their own phone wherever they are. It works the same as being in one room.
How many people can join?
Can I edit a ready-made pack?
Yes. Open it in the builder and change anything: the questions, the answers, the order, the timing. Your edited copy is saved to your account and the original pack is untouched.
What if a question looks wrong?
Every question has a Report this question link during play. Use it. Reports come straight to us and are the fastest way a bad question gets fixed, so please do not assume somebody else has already flagged it.
Can I split the room into teams?
How do people end up on a team?
How is a team scored?
Normally it is the total of everybody on it. If the teams end up different sizes, and one has more than one player more than another, scoring switches to each team's average instead, so a team cannot win just by being bigger. The board says which of the two is being used at the time. Individual scores carry on exactly as they always do, and the leaderboard underneath is unchanged, because personal score is what makes people try.
Where do team scores show up?
On the reveal after each question and on the leaderboard between questions, as bars across the top of the host's screen, and again on the podium at the end. Nothing appears while a question is actually running, because that screen is busy enough. On a player's own phone you see which team you are on rather than the full bars, since the room is watching the host's screen.
What do I choose before the room opens?
Who is playing, when a question ends and how the game finishes. End early when everyone answers moves on as soon as all the answers are in. Always use the full timer waits for the clock. Either way a question never runs past its timer, so a player who leaves never holds anyone up. Then pick a top 3 or top 5 podium, or Celebrate together for one shared room score with no ranking.
What are Put in order and Word cloud?
Two question types you can add in Quiz Studio. Put in order: type three to five items in the right order, and players see them shuffled, tap them into place and lock in. Word cloud: players type a word or short phrase, and at the reveal the answers fill the screen, sized by how many people gave them. A word cloud scores nothing.
Can I see how everyone did afterwards?
Yes. When the game ends, open Results on the host screen to see the % right for each question, who finished and the questions worth revisiting. Download a CSV, or tap Copy summary to paste a short summary into a message. The summary never names a player. Players' phones never see results.
Can people play in another language?
Choose English, French, Spanish or Portuguese from the language menu. Templates, the join screen and the game screens switch too, on each person's own device. Quiz content and names stay as written.
otiya AI
What does otiya AI actually do?
You name a subject and it writes the whole quiz: the questions, the answer options and the correct answer. You then review what it wrote and drop anything you do not want, so nothing goes into your quiz without you seeing it first.
Can it write questions from my own document?
Yes, if you would like to. Attach a PDF, up to 4MB, and it writes questions from what is inside that document. A handout, a report, a set of revision notes, a training deck. PDF only for now, so convert a Word file before uploading.
Why do I need to confirm my email first?
Is there a limit on how much I can generate?
Yes, there is a daily limit per account, and it resets every day at midnight UTC. If you reach it you will see a message saying so. It is set generously enough that ordinary use will not reach it, and if you are regularly running out, tell us what you are doing and we will look at it.
Should I trust everything it writes?
Read it first. AI gets things wrong, particularly on very recent events, local details and anything where the answer is disputed. That is exactly why the review step exists and why nothing is added automatically. For a classroom or anything with a prize on it, check the answers yourself.
Which languages can it write in?
English, French, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Swahili, Spanish, Portuguese, Bengali, Dutch, German, Hindi, Igala, Italian, Polish, Somali, Ukrainian, Urdu, Welsh and Zulu. Choose one before you ask. New languages are in beta; Igala is experimental. Review the draft before using it. You can change its suggested title in Quiz Studio.
Why is otiya AI sometimes unavailable?
Occasionally the service behind it is busy or we have paused it for maintenance. You will see a clear message when it happens, and it is usually short. Ready-made packs and the builder keep working throughout.
Workspaces
What is a workspace?
How do I invite someone?
Open your workspace, go to Team and choose Invite someone, then pick their role. We email them an invitation. They sign in or create an account with that address, confirm it and accept. You can resend or cancel an invite from Team.
What can each role do?
Owners and admins manage people and settings. Members create, edit and host quizzes. Viewers can see shared quizzes and insights, but can't edit or host. Settings shows exactly what your own role allows.
Can I keep a quiz private?
Yes. In Quiz Studio, under Who can see it, choose Only me and people I choose, then tick the colleagues who can edit and host it. Owners and admins see the title only. Players never need access to play it.
Can a quiz show a sponsor or partner?
Yes, on quizzes saved to a workspace. Add the name in Quiz Studio under Sponsor or partner, and it shows in the lobby and on the podium.
How do I delete a shared quiz, or leave a workspace?
In the workspace library, choose Delete on the quiz. Anyone who can edit can delete a shared quiz; a private one can be deleted by the person who made it or an admin. To leave, open Settings and choose Leave. The owner hands over ownership first.
Otiya Kids
What age is it for?
Ages 3 to 12. The early learning games for ages 3 to 5 are read aloud, so no reading is needed. The quizzes for ages 6 to 12 have questions, reading level, pacing and sounds built for that range.
Is Otiya Kids free?
Do children need accounts?
How does playing work?
Does Otiya Kids work offline?
Schools and inclusive classrooms
How does a school get Otiya access?
Do pupils need Otiya accounts?
No. Learners join a live room with the normal game code, link or QR. The school workspace is for adult educators and does not require a pupil roster. Homework works the same way: pupils open a link or type a code, with no account.
Can the teacher see a learner's Play Profile?
No. In Inclusive Live, Play your way preferences stay private to the learner's browser. The host sees the normal game participation data. It never shows a SEND label or a list of accessibility preferences.
What is accuracy-first scoring?
It removes speed as the scoring advantage so a learner is not given extra processing support and then penalised for using it. The teacher can still choose traditional speed plus accuracy when that suits the activity.
How does homework work?
In your school library, choose Set as homework on a quiz. Add a title, an optional due date, a timer if you want one, and Inclusive support. Share the link, code or QR, or send it straight to Google Classroom or Teams. Pupils pick a nickname and answer one question at a time; answering the last question hands it in, and they see the right answers after that. You see who handed in and which questions to revisit, and you can close it at any time.
Can pupils carry on later?
Yes, on the same device and browser. On a different device they would start again.
Which quizzes can be homework?
Any school quiz without Put in order, Word cloud or Map round questions. Those formats are for live games for now.
How do I share a game or homework to Google Classroom or Teams?
In a school game, the waiting room has Google Classroom and Teams buttons that share the join link. Homework has the same buttons when you share it. After a game, Copy summary gives you a short class summary to paste, and it never names a pupil.
Does Otiya diagnose SEND?
How is AI used in school content?
What should our school review before a pilot?
Has Otiya completed an accessibility audit?
How do we run and evaluate a school pilot?
Can educators practise without affecting pilot evidence?
Can Otiya use our school as a case study?
Only when the school records appropriate school-level permission. The pilot workspace distinguishes anonymous and named school permission, and neither option authorises pupil names, photos, quotes or identifiable child stories; those would require separate appropriate approval.
Prize draws
What is a prize draw for?
Picking a winner in front of people, so everyone can see the choosing is fair. Raffles, giveaways, deciding who goes first, choosing a name out of a hat.
What are the four styles?
A spinning wheel, best for smaller groups where every name fits. A name reel that rolls through entrants. Cards that flip over. And a drum that tumbles and draws. They all pick the same way; choose whichever suits the room.
How do entrants get in?
Either type or paste the list yourself, or share the room and let people enter themselves with the same code, link or QR.
Can somebody win twice?
Not while Remove winner from pool is on, which it is unless you turn it off. A drawn name then leaves the pool, so multiple prizes go to different people. Turn it off when every name should stay in for every draw.
Playing on your own
Can I play without a room?
Does it keep my score?
No. Solo scores are not saved. Each round shows your score and the questions worth another look, and the next round starts fresh.
Accounts and billing
What does an account cost?
Do you need my card?
No. There is no card required to create an account or to host during beta.
How do I change my email or password?
I did not get the confirmation email.
Check your spam or promotions folder first, since that is where it usually is. If it is not there after a few minutes, try the resend option, and check the address for a typo. If it still does not arrive, contact us and we will sort it manually.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. In My account, choose Delete my account and send the deletion request. Our team removes your account and the quizzes saved to it, and we confirm by email within a few days.
When something goes wrong
The game code is not working.
Codes are five characters and are case insensitive. They use letters and the numbers 2 to 9 only, with no O, 0, I, 1 or L, so there is nothing to mix up. Codes also only work while the room is open, so if the host has finished the quiz or closed the room the code stops working and they will need to open a new one.
Somebody cannot join.
Get them to open the link fresh rather than reloading an old tab, and check they are not on a network that blocks things, which happens on some office and school wifi. Failing that, a different browser usually settles it.
A player dropped out mid-quiz.
They can rejoin with the same code and nickname and their score comes back with them. A brief connection loss does not end their game.
The shared screen and the phones are out of step.
The shared screen leads and the phones follow it, so give it a moment. If it persists, reload the shared screen: the room stays open and players stay in it.
There is no sound.
Check the sound button in the corner of the screen, then your device volume, and remember that phones on silent will not play anything. Sound is not needed to play, so it is worth carrying on and fixing it afterwards.
It looks wrong on my phone.
Try turning the phone to portrait and reloading. If something is genuinely broken, tell us which phone and which browser, because that detail is usually what makes it findable.
Privacy and safety
What do you store about players?
For somebody just joining a quiz, only the nickname they choose and their answers for that game. We do not ask players for an email address, a phone number or anything else, because they never make an account.
What about children?
Who can see my quizzes?
Personal quizzes are yours alone. People see the questions only when you host a room or share it with them. A quiz saved to a workspace can be seen by everyone in it, unless you make it private to you and the people you choose.
Where can I read the detail?
The privacy policy and terms cover it properly, and they are linked in the footer of every page.
No answers match that yet. Try a shorter word, or ask us and we will add it.
